College Content Management

Because we all have to deal with a CMS

Greetings all. Welcome to our fledgling group.

In a perfect world, what would your Content Management System do for you? What visions of features, what coding dreams dance with the sugarplums in your slumbering head? Let's make a list. Be specific and technical or broad and abstract.

If we can identify the places where our present reality falls short of the ideal -- then we can start working together to try to fix those problems and compile resources to help along the way. That's how Greg, Megan, and I first imagined this group at the excellent Next Newsroom Conference.

I realize this exercise is somewhat akin to a tweenage girl codifying a detailed list of specific job requirements for the future Mr. Right. A bit silly, perhaps, since most of us have to settle for Mr. Right Now. But hopefully instructive. Because we deserve so much better than that schmuck, am I right people?

I've been working sporadically on the Old Gold & Black site for over a year now. (Running on Expression Engine by the way.) So I've had more time to think about this than I care to admit. I'll start:

- A backend that fits into newsroom workflow, highly usable to allow any authorized editor or even writers to play with content
- Solid out of the box themes
- But architecture that makes it simple to customize CSS or design from scratch
- Search Engine Optimized, standards-minded code
- Multimedia can be simply attached to article, in any format
- Robust article relationships to group by section, topic, related, popularity, etc.
- Built-in RSS feeds and mailing lists
- Blogs, of course
- An ad server you control

I could go on and on, but I want to hear from others. What do you think?

Ouch, that sounds rough. Good point too. Does any one have a need for the hosted service any more?

We're going to be hosting the new Hurricane new site on our own server. Thank you, WordPress!
